Save the Sports Fan
I have a concern about the amount of time wasted by fans on professional football, basketball, and baseball. If these fans like sports so much, why not support the local high school or alumni school teams. And to be quite honest does anyone really have the time to follow these teams? Consider the number of hours each game lasts and how many games a sports fan wishes to keep up with during the season. Also consider the number of hours a person has to work. Now are these fans really spending that quality family time? How often do these fans get together with family members for an activity other than a movie, TV, or eating? I am talking about time that requires interaction. The reality of the situation is these fans are supporting large marketing ventures where the bottom line is money. It is sad to think about how much time and money is spent at one of these professional games versus how much time and money is actually spent on actual worthwhile causes that do have a lasting impact.
Why are fans so loyal ? Who is loyal to them? The professional football, basketball, and baseball players hitch onto teams that will give them the best deal, and the team loyalty goes as soon as a better offer can be obtained and acted upon. Just how much of the local team actually comes from that city? The teams themselves aren’t any better. Entire teams, owner and all, will just pack up and relocate in the quest for the bottom line. (i.e. The Houston Oilers to the Tennessee Titans) I see getting involved with these teams and players like getting involved in a bad relationship. The significant other is gone once he or she has eeked out whatever money can be extracted from the used individual.
The owners of these teams will do just about anything to get a buck and they do. In Houston the taxpayers got to pay for the owner’s desire for upscale facilities. Owners also have access to children in schools. Schools are so honored to have visits by these "idols". What is the true purpose of this visit? Public relations to spawn future buyers. (i.e. kind of like the cigarette companies market to kids) Teachers and students wear their support for these teams and inadvertently role model their support via an advertisement. This marketing effort nobody has ever questioned. It is disgusting that these large private ventures have their advertising directly paid for by the fans and can prey so easily upon to the most easily swayed marketing victims. And worth noting is the lack of garb donned by the typical basketball half-time show dancers and NFL professional cheerleaders which is an unquestionable exploitation of women. Also for sale is plenty of cleavage and skin exposed in the calendars picturing these women. What does that have to do with team spirit? Why not just take the kids to Hooters and support them too? At least the women there wear more clothing, are honest about their own exploitation, and aren’t hitting strongly sexually suggestive poses. (And then people are shocked their daughters want to dress like whores when mommy and daddy are shelling out gobs of money and/or time supporting these "celebrated" women... among all the other unnecessary garbage mom and dad hypocritically support.)
I really hope these fans wake up and realize what is going on. I imagine when they look back at the end of their lives they may find that they have squandered a lot of time and energy on something that just starts over every year. Families do not. Every year lost is gone. The most common regret is not "Gee, I wish I had watched another football game."

Let me recommend the book Fatland to you. In addition, the American Heart Association recently posted on their site that this generation of kids is predicted to not live as long as their parents due to obesity. What little time people have for leisure should be with the TV off and off of their duffs.
Zorro after reading your blog it reminded me to update mine. My passion for steelers runs deep. If you are like me business is a constant; But a respite from it gives me a fresh outlook. My http://serendipitysuccess.blogspot.com/2005/11/update-to-steelers-climb-to-top-of-afc.html has a similar theme and steelers plays important roles too. Football especially for most fans and partners is a highlight in the autumn and articles create great gatherings. Thanks for your Save the Sports Fan.
