A School Lesson

Our house is the neighborhood hub where children come over and play when it is hot outside. Most of the children on the street are girls. Today my home educated daughter got a lesson from her public schooled friends on the block. Today they played “We are the cheerleaders that sit at the popular table!!!” My daughter fortunately does not have to endure the torture of this at a school, but her neighborhood primary school friends are already vying for a seat at that table. I did take a minute to only partially explain the problem with this “table” to them. I asked them if they knew of any famous cheerleaders in history. Of course they didn’t. Cheerleaders just are not important. What I did not get into was the fact that on the school level, they serve to enforce the class system in the schools while trying to ensure a spot to marry up. On the professional level they also try to ensure a spot to marry up while providing revenue for the teams that they serve. They are very replaceable too, so they must not complain too much about the services they provide lest they be relieved of their position.

I don't ever remember wanting to be at the cheerleader table. I just wanted to wreak havoc on that table, but not ever be a member of that clique.

I do remember being heavily disappointed when you made it known that you wanted to try out for drill team. It was as though an infectious disease had temporarily taken the common sense of my best friend who was supposed to be a basketball player, not a dancing doll. I think it was M.H.'s influence and aspirations that drove you down that path.

I recall you danced for a short time, endured the heartache of playing with the superficial girls, and eventually regained your sense and came back to us.
