My Letter for the Curfew Review on Wednesday
Dear Harris County Juvenile Curfew Review Representatives,
I am a homeschooling mother of three. My children and I often venture out on the town for field trips, errands, and family reasons during the proposed hours of the curfew. I am extremely concerned about the proposed curfew impeding our freedom of movement. My older two children often "buddy" together to the bathroom or to another appropriate location while I nurse my youngest child. Dividing and conquering is often essential for us to make any progress in our movements. Obviously my older children could run into trouble while on their way down a walkway to meet up with me.
I have successfully raised my children to be mindful and polite thus far. The crime problem might be better solved by finding out why children would commit a crime. Perhaps poor socialization within the public schools and exposure to inappropriate media perpetuate the behaviors the curfews are trying to thwart. Maybe juvenile crime is associated with the juvenile literacy rate. The fact that a child is out during certain hours is not the reason why the child would commit the crime.
Please do not let the curfew pass. This would breed an undue amount of anxiety as my family tries to move freely within our own society. Curfews work better for war zones and criminals on probation. This curfew assumes distrust in children and sets a bad precedent for our society.
Sincerely,
Tiffane (and my last name)
