Midsemester Change
I don't really know what to classify our educaion style as, but it has changed again. We are switching what we are doing midsemester and going with what works for the kiddos. I am so glad to have this flexibility and freedom. Sure a lot of supposedly top notch private schools use the Abeka curriculum, but so what if you aren't having any fun and not wanting to learn. The curriculum has gotten tedious. We are dumping almost all of it.
I wonder what I think I am doing sometimes. Since we are dumping Abeka math, I ordered a trial dvd for the Math U See curriculum. My daughter and I watched it together. She really liked it and wants me to get it. Let me repeat that she really liked it and was highly motivated again. So what did stupid mom set out to do even after knowing what is working for my daughter and what she wants? I started asking around about other math programs. Duh! Don't worry I didn't purchase anything. We are having fun with mommy math for now until I purchase the Math U See which who knows when that will be.
It has been nice for both of us to go freestyle. The other day Jessica missed 8 +3 a couple of times in her addition practice. So just to mess with her I gave her a worksheet that had thirty-five problems of 8 + 3 on it. When she noticed it she laughed and said," Mom! I'm going to get you!" She got all her math right. lol
This freestyle method is awesome. If I didn't have the two younger siblings constantly pulling on me and my attention, I don't know if I'd bother with curriculums for Jessica at all. When we do any of our 'school' (I cringe to call it that) our way, we have a lot more fun. The session can go anywhere and that is a good time.
We will definitely continue freestyle spelling. Her spelling words are going to get very interesting. Some of the spelling words we have on our list now I just know Abeka wouldn't dare consider. lol This is much better for us though. The smiles are back.

Tiffane --
A good friend here uses MUS with her kids and they all LOVE it. Who knows...I may go that route with DJ and Janie. But, for now I'm thinking of Singapore Math for them. I have a little while before I have to decide.
Hugs,
Karen
