Youth Soccer Cont...
Yesterday was another 'great day' with the YMCA. Only 6 of our players showed up and we play seven on a side. The other team was even worse. Only four players showed, one was in the bathroom across the field at game time, and the coach didn't even bother to come or tell anyone she wasn't coming.
I reworked the game so that we played 5 on a side borrowing players from my team to make 5 for the other team. For the first quarter I had one helpful volunteer from my team play for the other team. After that I had to borrow my oldest child to play fullback for the other team the rest of the game, because I had run out of volunteers.
Another irritation is that the ref tried to leave. Seeing as how this was going to be more of a scrimmage than a game justified in his mind leaving. I disallowed this and explained that the kids were expecting the full show. (Show is right.)
It was hot and we called the game after the third quarter, because it was only my oldest two kids playing against each other. All the others were too tired to play. What a show.
Now I go into this a little more.
I have a total of nine players on my team. I might actually have 12, but after 4 practices and three games, I still have never met 3 of them. So I guess I have 9. One mom brings three of them. She is the one that missed and despite my asking parents to please sound off if their kiddos cannot come, she didn't. We end up waiting around for her kids to never come again like we did for picture day. She also knows that if her kids miss we don't have a full team.
The other team only has 5 players which regularly come. They asked if they could merge their team with mine as the parents that do show are completely demoralized. I agreed to take 5 of them and NO three year olds as this is 4/5 yo soccer. If a parent wants their 3 yo to play, then they can coach the team. Taking 5 players would bring my team to 14 players which would gaurantee every child half of the game if all were to show.
What a mess. This is a team sport. Missing impacts the rest of the team. Please give me a team with players that have parents that care. Pray for the other kids.
