Freedom of Movement
I believe it would be cruel to send my son to school. He is very active and NEEDS his freedom to roam and explore. So do a lot of boys (and girls). At a school he would hardly get the time he needs to just 'go'. He likely would get into trouble because of his extra energy in the classroom with whatever misbehavior extra energy might stem and miss recess... the very thing he would need. Some kiddos like the active boy two doors down get grounded for misbehaving in school and miss the playtime outside with their friends after school. Talk about deprivation. Anyway, as I have gotten smarter about punishments, I have found a punishment system that works wonderfully!!! PT! The extra energy is the very reason he gets into trouble in the first place, so why not help him expend some of it? Isn't that better than making him miss playtime?
My system is simple. There has to be a worse enforceable alternative to the PT the offender can choose should he not carry out his PT. So he can either choose a spanking or the PT. My son has chosen a spanking before only to change his mind right before receiving it. Spanking isn't such a bad punishment for a child either if used judiciously. For one he has the choice of another punishment. Two, always spank on the bottom. Three, never have the angry face red from the high blood pressure you get when your son p!sses you off while administering the spanking. Go to another room first and let your blood pressure return to normal. When your face looks like it could use a little blush, then it is safe to administer the spanking.
PT exercises are easy to come up with. For antagonizing his sister, maybe 10 to 15 squats will do coupled with an apology albeit insincere. For repeat offenses maybe a little more squats or some push-ups. For the most severe offenses, let the daddy administer a full 'crap-out' of whatever the muscle group of choice is for the day. lol We've only had one 'crap-out'. That was for intentionally inflicting pain on the family dog.
Another benefit of PT with the child's choice of a spanking alternative (as if) is that the punishment is over quickly. You can get over the offense and get on with your day. Grounding/missing recess/time-out tend to drag out a punishment. Let's just move on.
And what about time-out, since I mentioned it? If the kid has tons of uppity energy, don't try it... especially if he has to just sit or stand and do nothing. If he is cranky or overstimulated and needs a nap/downtime, he needs a quiet time in his room. Don't expect a little guy to 'sit' in time-out without getting into more trouble. That is inherently a bad idea and against the nature of a wiggle worm.
